Exercise 4150. Points 2, theme: Gaussian Distribution

Open exercise
The attached file contains monthly and annual long term precipitation averages in Estonian meteorological stations.
  • Calculate the mean annual amont of precipitation in Estonia and the 99% confidence limits of the mean.
  • Is the application of statistical methods that are presuming normal distribution justified for this sample? Why you think so?
Data: SADEMED.xls

Instructions

It is easy to calculate sample statistics using SDC. Select Univariate sample and copy the data column to the input cell. The SDC removes lines beginning with a character (column names) automatically. Decimal separator can be either point or comma. Press Calculate or Enter.

The use of normality assuming methods is justified if the variable should theoretically have normal distribution of values and if the sample difference from normal distribution is not proved. A common method for checking normality is the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.
